HISTORY OF THE GRADUAL ACCEPTANCE OF VOICEPRINT SPECTROGRAMS, WHICH ARE VISUAL REPRESENTATIONS OF THE HUMAN VOICE, AS LEGAL EVIDENCE IN COURT.
Abstract
THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE HISTORY OF VOICEPRINTS, FROM THE PRIMARY WORK OF LAWRENCE G. KERSTA THROUGH INVESTIGATIONS MADE BY DR. OSCAR TOSI, RELATING EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS TO LEGAL ADMISSION INTO EVIDENCE IN SEVERAL SPECIFIC CASES. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE DILEMMA OF SCIENTIFIC DISAGREEMENT AS TO THE VALIDITY OF VOICEPRINT IDENTIFICATION NO LONGER SEEMS AN OBSTACLE TO A MORE WIDESPREAD USE OF THIS TECHNIQUE IN THE COURTROOM.
