Anomie is concerned with how deviant behavior fits into society, not an attempt to develop a comprehensive theory of crime, and the relationship between anomie and the study of white collar crime is not fully developed.

Abstract

The authors explore the potential contribution of anomie to the understanding of white collar crime. They discuss Merton's theory of deviance and social structure, Sutherland's theory of differential association, and Merton's view of white collar offenders. They develop the implications of anomie for white collar crimes and explore the role of situation in criminal activity at the individual level. In addition, the analysis looks at the recidivism of white collar offenders and access to opportunities for conformity. 46 references, 23 notes, and 1 table
