AN ACCOUNT OF THE EXPERIENCES OF A GROUP OF SOCIAL WORKERS' CONTACTS WITH 54 BOYS FROM THE SLUM AREA OF A NORTHERN ENGLISH TOWN AND OF THEIR ATTEMPTS TO KEEP THEM OUT OF TROUBLE AND TO CARRY OUT RESEARCH SIMULTANEOUSLY.
Abstract
OVER A PERIOD OF FOUR AND A HALF YEARS, THE WORKERS WERE ABLE TO HELP THE BOYS WITH A VARIETY OF PROBLEMS, INCLUDING WORK, ACCOMMODATION, COURT APPEARANCES, AND FAMILY CONFLICTS. AT THE END OF THE PERIOD THE PROJECT WAS EVALUATED TO DISCOVER WHETHER, COMPARED WITH A SIMILAR GROUP IN ANOTHER NEIGHBOURHOOD, THE BOYS HAD MADE PROGRESS IN SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE AVOIDANCE OF DELINQUENT BEHAVIOUR. THE RESULTS HAVE ENCOURAGING IMPLICATIONS FOR SOCIAL POLICY AND ADMINISTRATION. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT)
