ANALYSIS OF THE SOCIO-STRUCTURAL MOTIVATIONS FOR THE INCREASE AND TREND OF CRIME IN ITALY AND CRITIQUE OF CRIME CAUSE RESEARCH THAT FAILS TO ADEQUATELY TAKE THESE SOCIOLOGICAL FACTORS INTO ACCOUNT.
Abstract
IN THIS PART OF THE STUDY, THE AUTHOR REVIEWS THE MOST RECENT RESEARCH ON CRIME AND ITS CAUSES, WITH A VIEW TO ASSESSING ITS VALIDITY IN THE LIGHT OF THE ACTUAL MANIFESTATIONS AND TRENDS OF CRIME IN ITALY IN RECENT YEARS. IT IS THE OPINION OF THE AUTHOR THAT MOST OF THESE STUDIES HAVE A PREDOMINANTLY CLINICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL OR PSYCHO-ANALYTICAL CHARACTER AND FAIL TO VIEW THE PROBLEM OF CRIMINALITY IN CONNECTION WITH THE OVERALL SOCIOECONOMIC STRUCTURE. LACKING A SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE, THESE STUDIES TEND TO BE FRAGMENTARY IN AS MUCH AS THEY EXAMINE PARTICULAR PHENOMENA, SUCH AS JUVENILE DELINQUENCY, WITHOUT CONFRONTING THE SOCIAL REALITY IN WHICH THEY OCCUR, AND TO CORROBORATE THE STIGMATIZING VIEW OF CRIMINALITY.
