An overall evaluation of the AIDS Education Programme of the N.S.W. Department of Corrective Services from March 1987 to March 1989 analyzed program delivery and organization, prisoners' exposure to AIDS education, and knowledge and attitudes about AIDS.
Abstract
Of the random sample of 193 prisoners from 6 N.S.W. gaols, 67 percent had experienced some AIDS education in 1987 such as pamphlets, videos, or talks. By late 1988, the level of prisoner knowledge continued to be generally poor, even though "educated" prisoners scored slightly higher than non-educated prisoners. There was no difference in attitudes about AIDS between educated and non-educated prisoners. Since initially selected in mid-1987, few AIDS program organizers have been able to do much more than distribute pamphlets about AIDS and organize occasional seminars. Prison AIDS programs are the only source of AIDS education for many prisoners. 18 tables, 5 appendixes, and 20 references (Author abstract modified)
