THE AUTHOR EXAMINES THE ESTABLISHMENT AND FUNCTIONING OF THE UNARMED GARDA SIOCHANA POLICE FORCE IN IRELAND IN 1922.
Abstract
PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE POLITICAL ATMOSPHERE AT THE TIME OF THE GARDA'S CREATION, AND TO THE GARDA'S STRUGGLE TO GAIN THE ACCEPTANCE OF A SOCIETY ACCUSTOMED TO VIOLENCE. POLITICAL INFLUENCES ON THE FUNCTIONING OF THE POLICE ARE DESCRIBED. THE HISTORY OF THE GARDA IS EXAMINED IN DETAIL THROUGH WORLD WAR TWO. AN EPILOGUE SUMMARIZES THE GARDA'S FUNCTIONING THROUGH 1971.
