This article discusses facial recognition in biometric security systems.
Abstract
Biometrics is the measuring of unique human dimensions. Various biometrics currently under development include voice, fingerprint, palm, iris, retina, and facial recognition. Facial recognition is the most acceptable to users, in part because of the environmental conditions required to operate it correctly and its degree of accuracy. Facial recognition can be layered with an ID card facility to provide a higher level of security often required in prison and justice facilities. The major functions of a facial recognition security system are verification, identification, and record matching. Prisons can monitor and control access to specific areas by prisoners, prison officers, visitors, and delivery drivers. Facial recognition can also be used by operators of closed circuit television within the prison to identify prisoners they do not recognize. Facial recognition together with an automatic number plate recognition application can help to control and monitor staff, delivery, visitors, and prisoners in transit vehicles.
