TREATS THE SELF-IMAGES, METHODS OF OPERATION, DIFFICULTIES, BELIEFS AND ORDINARY PURSUITS OF CRIMINALS AND VICTIMS IN AN ANTHOLOGY OF PAPERS OF DIVERSE METHODOLOGICAL AND THEORETICAL ORIENTATION.
Abstract
THREE TYPES OF PROFESSIONAL PROPERTY OFFENDERS - THE FENCE, THE ROBBER AND THE BURGLAR - ARE EACH STUDIED FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. TWO PAPERS DEAL WITH DEVIANT BEHAVIOR CONSIDERED LESS STUDIED - CRIME WITHIN THE MILITARY AND MIDDLE-CLASS GAMBLING ON SPORTS. ONE PAPER PROPOSES FORMALIZING AND REFINING THE LABELING THEORY, AND ANOTHER EXAMINES INMATES' TATTOOS AS A FACET OF THE SELF-IMAGE OF THE CONVICT. IMAGES OF VICTIMS ARE DISCUSSED IN PAPERS DEALING WITH VICTIM-COMPENSATION PROGRAMS, VICTIM-OFFENDER RELATIONSHIP IN FORCIBLE RAPE, AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BEING BOTH AN OFFENDER AND A VICTIM. PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD DEVIANCY ARE TREATED IN PAPERS THAT PRESENT COLLEGE STUDENT PERSPECTIVES ON THE SERIOUSNESS OF CRIME, THE CONTENT AND EFFECTS OF IMAGES OF DEVIANTS, AND THE VIEWS OF TEENAGE DRUG USERS TOWARD THE SOURCES THAT PROVIDE DRUG INFORMATION.
