THIS ARTICLE REVIEWS SOME BASIC FINDINGS OF A MULTNOMAH COUNTY STUDY REGARDING VICTIMIZATION OF THE ELDERLY, THEIR RESPONSES TO POTENTIAL AND ACTUAL VICTIMIZATION, AND IMPLICATIONS FOR CRIME PREVENTION STRATEGIES.
Abstract
ALL DATA ARE BASED EITHER ON RESEARCH CONDUCTED AMONG 500 RANDOMLY SELECTED ADULTS OVER 60 IN THE PORTLAND/ MULTNOMAH COUNTY AREA OR RESEARCH DEVELOPED OUT OF 300 CASE REVIEWS FROM POLICE RECORDS IN PORTLAND/MULTNOMAH COUNTY. THE FINDINGS INDICATE THAT OLDER ADULTS ARE NOT VICTIMIZED MORE THAN OTHER POPULATION SEGMENTS, THAT THE FEAR OF VICTIMIZATION IS MUCH HIGHER THAN ACTUAL CRIME RATES, AND THAT 62.5 PERCENT OF THOSE VICTIMIZED HAD TAKEN POSITIVE ACTION TOWARD PROTECTING THEMSELVES. THE IMPLICATIONS OF THESE AND OTHER FINDINGS FOR PUBLIC CRIME PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAMMING ARE DISCUSSED....EB
