PROGRAM OF THE VENTURA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA SHERIFF'S OFFICE IN WHICH UNIFORMED OFFICERS GIVE INSTRUCTION AND ANSWER QUESTIONS ON LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE.
Abstract
FIVE WEEK, ONE HOUR PER WEEK PROGRAMS FOR PRIMARY, EIGHTH GRADE, AND HIGH SCHOOL LEVELS ARE DESIGNED TO PREVENT FORMATION OF GROUNDLESS, BUT DETRIMENTAL PREJUDICES CONCERNING LAW AND ITS ENFORCEMENT. FURTHER, THE PROGRAM OFFERS A CHANCE FOR STUDENTS TO BECOME FAMILIAR WITH AT LEAST ONE OFFICER IN AN ENVIRONMENT OTHER THAN A HOSTILE ONE AND THEREBY HELPS DETER FORMATION OF A POOR ATTITUDE TOWARD THE LAW AND ITS ENFORCERS. THE RESULTS OF A SURVEY OF 11,000 YOUTH ARE PRESENTED TO INDICATE THAT THE PREVAILING ATTITUDES TOWARD LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITY IN GENERAL AMONG VENTURA COUNTY YOUTH ARE NEGATIVE.
