The fiscal year 1999 service plan of the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) describes program opportunities available to State and local correctional agencies, technical assistance and training activities, and information sharing and networking events, and also includes a section on cooperative agreements the NIC anticipates funding.
Abstract
The service plan is based on two strategies to support the NIC's vision and mission and carry out its programs and services; (1) proactive and leadership approach to influence national policies, practices, and operations by identifying and developing programs that address areas of emerging interest and concern to correctional executives and practitioners and public policy- makers; and (2) responsive assistance and services to client agencies and staff to improve their correctional systems. Programs and services are delivered through direct technical assistance, special emphasis programs, training services, information services, and networking activities. The section on technical assistance describes services available to jails, prisons, and community correctional agencies. The section on special emphasis programs identifies program participation opportunities available to State and local correctional agencies, while the section on information sharing and networking covers NIC activities that promote the sharing of information among State and local correctional practitioners. The section on training activities addresses various training programs to be conducted in partnership with State and local correctional agencies.
