This book is designed to help police officers prepare for written and oral police management examinations.
Abstract
Regardless of whether an individual will be taking a written examination or oral test, participating in an assessment center, or being evaluated on professional training and experience, this book will sharpen the user's test-taking skills, provide instruction in the latest police and private-sector management techniques, and develop a knowledge base needed for career advancement. In addition to presenting material likely to be on a police-management examination, this book also challenges traditional thinking about police organizations and offers new strategies and innovative thinking about what is involved in leading a law enforcement enterprise. The book's section that addresses preparation for promotion focuses on reading for understanding, energizing the learning process, what to do before the test announcement, types of test questions, the components of the test announcement, and motivation as the key to success. Another section is designed as a management study guide. It provides instruction in organizations, management functions, management philosophies and theories, new thinking about the management process, management concepts and terms, leadership theories and styles, and motivating people. Other issues considered are communication, discipline, delegating tasks, controlling the organization, evaluating policy and practice, and enhancing job performance. Another major section focuses on the written examination, including characteristics of written tests, how to study for them, taking multiple-choice tests, essay question, and combination tests. Other sections of the book address characteristics of oral exams and how to prepare for them; the history and procedures of assessment centers as well as how to prepare for them; and the value of education, training, and experience and how they are scored in management exams.
