DESCRIBES A POLICE-COMMUNITY CLERGY ALLIANCE THAT NURTURES COOPERATION BETWEEN POLICE AND THE CLERGY AS RESPECTED LEADERS IN THE COMMUNITY IN THE INTEREST OF DEALING EFFECTIVELY WITH COMMUNITY PROBLEMS.
Abstract
A POLICE BADGE WITH THE TITLE OF CLERGYMAN ENGRAVED UPON IT, AND AN IDENTIFICATION CARD ARE PROVIDED FOR PHILADELPHIA POLICE COMMUNITY RELATIONS CLERGYMEN. THE CLERGY PERIODICALLY RIDE AS OBSERVERS IN PATROL CARS IN THEIR DISTRICTS. THEY ALSO ASSIST IN WORKSHOPS AND OTHER POLICE-COMMUNITY PROGRAMS. POLICE ARE ENCOURAGED TO SUMMON THE CLERGYMEN TO ASSIST POLICE AT THE SCENES OF TENSION AND RACIAL DISTURBANCES. THE CLERGY ALSO INTERPRET THE NEEDS AND ATTITUDES OF THE PUBLIC TO THE POLICE AND JUDICIARY.
