CASELOAD MOVEMENT AND RECIDIVISM IN ONE CASELOAD IN THE JUVENILE SUPERVISION DIVISION OF THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY PROBATION DEPARTMENT.
Abstract
AN ANALYSIS OF MOVEMENT IN THE CASELOAD SHOWED A FAILURE RATE OF 35 PERCENT OVER A PERIOD OF TWO YEARS. FROM THE CASELOAD STUDY, A PROFILE OF THE RECIDIVIST EMERGES. GENERALLY, HE IS FROM A ONE-PARENT FAMILY, WITH LITTLE STABILITY IN HIS HOME ENVIRONMENT. HE HAS BEEN PREVIOUSLY ARRESTED FOR THE SAME TYPE OF OFFENSE, IS UNEMPLOYED, AND ALTHOUGH ATTENDING SCHOOL, HE IS HAVING DIFFICULTY ADJUSTING TO THE ACADEMIC SETTING. AFTER SUBSEQUENT ARREST, THE CHANCES OF OUT OF HOME PLACEMENT ARE 70 PERCENT. THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS THAT THE FULL ATTENTION OF THE PROBATION OFFICER SHOULD BE FOCUSED ON THE UTILIZATION OF MAXIMUM RESOURCES AND SERVICES IN THE EARLY MONTHS OF THE PROBATION PERIOD IN AN EFFORT TO HEAD OFF POTENTIAL RECIDIVISM.
