This is a proceedings report of a special briefing on countering terrorism, presented by the George Washington University and the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.
Abstract
It is the mission of the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies and the George Washington University Terrorism Studies Program to explore the academic options for dealing with terrorism around the world, along with exploring the effects of technology in the new world. This was a discussion on the current and future trends of terrorism. Opening remarks by Professor Yonah Alexander focused on four aspects that he thought would be critical in the discussion to come: terrorism at the conceptual level, terrorist perpetrators and actors, the modus operandi of terrorists, and responses to terrorism. Ambassador T.B. Sreenivasan of India talked about the terrorist situation in Nairobi and India, and his views on the United Nations’ treatment of terrorism; Dr. Alan Makovsky discussed the Turkish response to attacks on U.S. embassies and the U.S. response; Mr. James Zackrison addressed the topic of the current and future trends in terrorism and low intensity conflict in Latin America; Dr. Alan Shaw touched on a number of issues including the use of chemical, biological, and nuclear terrorism as well as cyber-terrorism; Ms. Michelle Van Cleave discussed congressional actions in response to terrorism; and Dr. David Little talked about religion and terrorism. The session concluded after a few question were asked dealing with Iraq, the U.S. global law enforcement and cooperation from U.S. allies in the fight against terrorism.
