Abstract
THIS BOOK, WRITTEN BY EDUCATORS FOR EDUCATORS, IDENTIFIES THE BEST PRACTICES FOR THE EDUCATIONAL AMELIORATION OF SUCH YOUTH. NUMEROUS DEMOGRAPHIC FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED WITH THE INTENT OF PROVIDING A SENSE OF PROPORTION ON THE CRITICAL ISSUES RELATING TO THESE YOUTH (FAMILY, INCIDENCE OF SOCIAL MALADJUSTMENT, LABELING, EXPECTANCY, AND SOCIAL PERFORMANCE). PREVENTION, PUNISHMENT, EDUCATION, AND REHABILITATION MEASURES ARE CONSIDERED, AND CAUSES AND SYMPTOMS OF TROUBLED YOUTH ARE DEFINED. READING THEORY AND RESEARCH WITH PROBLEM ADOLESCENTS ARE DISCUSSED TO AID EDUCATORS IN HELPING THESE YOUTH IMPROVE THEIR READING ABILITIES. THE ADMINISTRATIVE MANAGEMENT OF INSTITUTIONS AND SCHOOL PROGRAMS FOR TROUBLED YOUTH IS CONSIDERED, INCLUDING THE STATE-OF-THE-ART, PLANNED CHANGE, TYPES OF FORMAL ORGANIZATION, SYSTEMS ANALYSIS, AND THE INSTITUTIONAL ADMINISTRATOR. THE PSYCHOSOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS IS DISCUSSED WITH SPECIAL ATTENTION PAID TO PROBLEMS AND ASSESSMENT INSTRUMENTATION IN PREDICTING DELINQUENCY AND TO VARIABLES IN PSYCHOSOCIAL AND EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENT. A LIST OF TESTS AND PUBLISHERS IS PROVIDED. HOWEVER, AS STANDARDIZED TESTS USED IN FORMAL ASSESSMENT PROCEDURES ARE INSUFFICIENT TO DESCRIBE BEHAVIOR ADEQUATELY OR TO FORM THE BASIS FOR INSTRUCTIONAL OR BEHAVIORAL CHANGE IN AN EDUCATIONAL SETTING, TECHNIQUES FOR INFORMALLY ASSESSING TROUBLED YOUTH ARE OFFERED, INCLUDING CRITERION-REFERENCED ASSESSMENT AND OBSERVATION IN THE CLASSROOM.
