STUDY OF THE EFFECTS ON THE INDIVIDUAL OF THE PROCESS BY WHICH NEW PRISONERS ARE INTEGRATED INTO THE TOTAL PRISON CULTURE.
Abstract
THE PROCESS ORIENTS THE MAN TOWARDS CRIMINAL CONCEPTS, AND IS DESTRUCTIVE OF THE INTENT OF REHABILITATION. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES PUBLIC APATHY AND THE DETERIORATING PHYSICAL CONDITION OF MOST INSTITUTIONS AS CONTRIBUTORS TO ADVERSE SOCIALIZATION. THE PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE INMATES THEMSELVES AND OF MOST GUARDS INTENSIFY THE PROBLEM. ADVERSE EFFECTS OF PRISONIZATION, SUCH AS LOSS OF FREEDOM, PHYSICAL ABUSE, LOSS OF RIGHTS, AND FORCED HOMOSEXUALITY, ARE EXAMINED.
