This book on AIDS and HIV in prison contains a unique collection of comparative data and associated analysis written by experts and reviews laws and procedures that apply in the prison setting.
Abstract
The book covers such controversial issues as drug use by inmates, homosexual practices, early release, drug-free prison units, education, and the availability of condoms and bleach. Particular attention is paid to drug abuse in prisons and homosexual behavior among male inmates. Official discourse is compared and contrasted with the daily experience of inmates, thereby isolating the "reality gap" between institutional statements made for public consumption and actual inmate practices. Data and analysis are provided on AIDS in prisons in Norway, Germany, Poland, England, Wales, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Canada, and the United States. Footnotes and tables
