Abstract
This text introduces a framework that integrates strengths, empowerment, and restorative justice for counseling women. Attention is drawn to the impact of the feminist movement focusing on legal issues that are relevant to women. The basic precept of restorative justice is defined. Practical guidelines are provided to teach offenders basic life skills, such as anger and stress management, and communication skills. Narratives from recent interviews with female offenders, correctional counselors, and victims are also shared to demonstrate the successes as well as failures of the strength-restorative approach. Documentation is also included to support the claim that the war on drugs is really a war on women of color. Special attention is drawn to addressing controversial topics. Some of these topics include the following: prison homosexuality and AIDS, the social meaning of rape, life in shelters and death row, and the connection between child and wife abuse.
