AN ANTHOLOGY OF SOCIOLOGICAL STUDIES THAT EXPLORE SOCIAL PROCESSES BY WHICH DEVIANCE IS DEFINED, AND THE ANATOMY OF A VARIETY OF DEVIANT CAREERS, INCLUDING HOMOSEXUALITY, STRIPTEASING, BURGLARY, AND AMBULANCE CHASING LAWYERS.
Abstract
IN EXAMINING THE ACTIONS OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF NARCOTICS AND ANTI-PORNOGRAPHY GROUPS IN TWO CITIES OVER A PERIOD OF TIME, THE BUREAUCRATIC AND SOCIAL PROCESSES THAT DEFINE DEVIANCY ARE PRESENTED. BUREAUCRATIC NEEDS FOR SUPPORT, GROUP GOAL CONSENSUS, STAFF RECRUITMENT, AND CRITERIA FOR DECISIONMAKING ARE CONCLUDED TO HAVE SPURRED THE BUREAU OF NARCOTICS TO CARVE OUT DEFINITIONS OF DEVIANCY IN THE AREA OF DRUG ABUSE. ANTI-PORNOGRAPHY CAMPAIGNS STUDIED ARE SAID TO EVIDENCE A CONCERN OF SOCIAL AND VALUE GROUPS TO ESTABLISH THE DOMINANCE OF THEIR LIFE STYLE. THE SOCIAL MILIEUS AND ADAPTIVE NEEDS THAT STIMULATE AND REINFORCE VARIOUS CAREERS OF DEVIANCY ARE EXAMINED.
