This paper describes the rationale for and the development of a new questionnaire developed in Australia and that measures adolescent demographics and drug use.
Abstract
The first half of the Demographics and Drug Use of Teenagers (DDUT) questionnaire consists of questions about the person's sex, age, employment status, income source, education, ethnic background, parental occupation, living arrangements, sexual orientation, geographical location, and mobility, as well as how the person was recruited for the study. The second half asks about drug use and drug injection during the past 12 months, drug binges, and agency contacts as a result of drug use. The DDUT has been found to be acceptable to young drug users, suitable for use with both injecting drug users and noninjectors, as well as easy to administer and code. It can be modified in minor ways to suit local conditions. Features sought during its development included simplicity, confidentiality, precision, relevance of content, and veracity of responses. A brief questionnaire such as the DDUT can provide a large amount of descriptive data for analysis. 12 references and address and telephone number from which to obtain the DDUT
