The role of school counselors in dealing with and preventing violence in the school setting is summarized, based on a series of book contributions on the topic.
Abstract
The first section of the book discusses the nature of the problem of school violence and indicates youth violence is increasing, reasons for violent behavior among youth are multifaceted and interactive, and the most effective interventions are directed by school administrators who understand local needs and provide the budget to meet those needs. In addressing the etiology of school violence, the second section of the book shows retaliation appears to be the primary reason young people engage in violent behavior and the media plays a role in perpetuating stereotypes of youth at risk for violence. The third section of the book describes numerous violence prevention strategies, noting that primary prevention is the preferred treatment. This section also examines specific violence prevention programs, asset development and responsibility for behavior, and anger management. Subsequent sections of the book cover violence targeted toward special populations such as suicidal adolescents and gay and lesbian youth and violence intervention strategies related to individuals, schools, and counselor training programs.
