This report by the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute ("the Institute") presents information on the Institute's activities in 2011.
Abstract
The Institute assists governments and the international community as a whole in addressing the threats of crime by fostering just and efficient criminal justice systems, the formulation and implementation of improved policies, and the promotion of national self-reliance through the development of institutional capacity. Institute activities related to countering the threat of crime address the knowledge base on countering organized crime in Europe; counterfeiting conducted by organized crime; countering environmental crime as a new Institute priority; cybercrime; countering trafficking in precious metals; and addressing crime prevention and criminal justice in an urban environment. Another section of the report describes Institute activities related to increasing the efficiency of criminal justice systems and the protection of vulnerable groups. Topics in this section pertain to building capacity in juvenile justice; countering gender-based violence and trafficking in women and children; addressing gender differences in drug addiction; and protecting a vulnerable population, with attention to albinism. Institute activities in promoting international criminal law and practice have focused on the War Crime Justice Project. This involves various Institute initiatives for collecting and transferring knowledge acquired by international institutions that can be given to national judiciaries in facilitating the prosecution of war crime, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Another section of this report describes Institute activities related to sharing best practices in building capacity to promote human rights and improving access to services. Other main sections of the report address Institute activities related to security governance and countering the appeal of terrorism; training and advanced education in crime prevention and criminal justice; and management of the Institute.
