This document deals with promising practices and recommendations related to corrections.
Abstract
This is a reprint of Chapter 5 from New Directions From the Field: Victims' Rights and Services for the 21st Century. The chapter examines the adult and juvenile justice agencies responsible for incarceration, detention, supervision and surveillance of those accused or convicted of crime. The corrections system includes institutional corrections (the prison system) and facilities such as jails that temporarily confine those accused or convicted of crime. Community corrections includes probation and parole. The document discusses the role of victims in institutional and community corrections; a chronology of corrections' response to crime victims; and 15 recommendations from the field for corrections. The recommendations refer to a number of areas for action by corrections agencies, including establishing victim advisory committees, collecting and distributing restitution payments, and scope and design of victim-offender dialogue programs.
