This brief document provides advice and steps to follow for support providers who work with LGBTQ2S+ parents and families of youth in the juvenile justice system so that those individuals’ rights and needs are respected, and so their unique circumstances are taken into consideration.

Abstract

This tip sheet for juvenile justice providers aims to help create an environment that is inclusive, respectful, and supportive of LGBTQ2S+ parents and family members of youth in the juvenile justice system. The document provides steps providers to follow, to guide them in ensuring that those youth receive fair and just treatment within the system. Topics include cultural competency training, creating inclusive policies, respecting stated names and pronouns, providing safe spaces, respecting parent-child relationships, providing culturally sensitive screening and assessment, confidentiality, access to relevant support services, and regular review and evaluation of policies and procedures. The tip sheet aims to promote cultural competency that will give insights to juvenile justice providers that encounter LGBTQ2S+ parents and family members of youth in the juvenile justice system, and serve as a guidance for nondiscriminatory practices.
